What a k-Waste!

There has been many attempts to sensitise the people on e-waste and its consequences for the environment. Every year millions of tons of electronic wastes containing plastics, heavy metals, and other non-bio degradeable toxics are dumped into the air/water/earth causing enormous environmental pollution, especially in the developed countries. Recycling, reuse, environmental compatibility of electronic materials, green IT are some ways professed to overcome e-waste.

Of greater significanse, but less talked about phenomena is k-waste, in my opinion. Thousands of years ago, our scriptures emphasized the need to not only learn Knowledge thoroughly, but use and stand by it afterwards. In real situations, we are observing that enormous spending is done in imparting knowledge, a large portion of it, in relearning, however, people fail to use and adopt to what they learnt as Knowledge; such knowledge just residing in their physical memory but not shared or useful can be termed as k-waste

k-waste in contrast to e-waste must be costing the society much higher damage as it leads to waste of precious intellectual capital with its corresponding revenue opportunities and also can cause cultural pollution.

Let us join the war against e-waste as well as k-waste !!

CKO Humour

First CKO: After the recent Right to Information - RTI Act, we have changed to working with the full provisions of the act, only with a small modification.

Second CKO: What is that small modification ?

First CKO: For us we have defined RTI as "Refusal to Inform"!!

Disaster to Delight

Within a short times of a day or two, disasters of the Aila Cyclone and the Punjab riots have struck us, causing despairs. Thankfully, both of them have been of controllable scales and their effects will be overcome quickly. In disaster management, we say 'a disaster is a window to a new opportunity'. Even amidst despairs and distress, there is hope for a bright tomorrow, as a new confident Government takes over and the cheerful monsoon entering the Indian sub-continent well in advance of time.

Can't we also term Productivity as the ability to convert 'disaster' into 'delight' !!

Cultivate the Hearts

You think your 'brain' is the most fundamental part for KM? - the left brain makes you analytical and logical and the right brain makes you imaginative and that is what all knowledge in the world needs to be processed about.

More than being logical, analytical and imaginative, it is all the more essential to be empathising and being compassionate, and here is the need for your 'heart' to create a community of Trust.

Knowledge Management, to be successful in an organisation, should subordinate the 'brain' to the 'heart'. All the efforts to create and share knowledge in the organisation will fail if we are unable to create the 'Trust' that makes people collaborate.

Let us begin to cultivate the 'Hearts' in our organisations!

The Right Choice

The choice between the principles and pragmatism makes all the difference for some people. When your life is insterspersed with instances when you have to make a choice between two alternatives, it is advisable to analyse in a neutral manner as to which direction would provide you a longer term goal attainment, rather than short term quick fixes.

Humourously, the choice between the wife and the world is equally a difficult proposition even to complicate the highest court of the nation, as given in this news.

Here is wishing you a wise (wife) choice always for you :-)

Positive Thinking - One more +

Whenever you are concerned with anxieties and difficulties in life and looking for redressal of tensions and stressful situations, you magically come across ideas for positive thinking. Here is one such interesting list taken from Whispers

1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

2. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their
conversational skills will be as important as any other.

3. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you
want.

4. When you say, 'I love you,' mean it.

5.When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the eye.

6.Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

7. Believe in love at first sight.

8. Never laugh at anyone's dream. People who don't have dreams don't have much.

9. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.

10. In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.

11. Don't judge people by their relatives.

12. Talk slowly but think quickly.

13. When someone asks you a question , you don't want to answer,
smile and ask, 'Why do you want to know?'

14. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

15. Say 'God bless you' when you hear someone sneeze.

16. When you lose, don't lose the lesson

17. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and
Responsibility for all your actions.

18. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

19. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps
to correct it.

20.Smile when picking up the phone, The caller will hear it in your
voice.

21. Spend some time alone.

While some of these tips are innovative, some others are just common sense - After all, is that not everything about the life ?

Holistic Theme of Gyan

Pardon those who damage and harm
Profess an age old Tamil Kural of Poem
Since - That's the way to shame them

Knowledge Culture is universal theme
Valid for all, me, you and all of them
Spread love, peace and holistic Gyan

Material and Energy forms of Knowledge

Like the fundamental aspect of the nature, the atom, Knowledge exhibits itself in material and energetic forms. In materialistic form, it gets expressed through explicit means of verbal, visual or documented structures. In energetic forms, it gets tacit in opinions, beliefs and values. There is a constant and simultaneous  exhibition and interchange of these two forms of Knowledge just like the waters of the ocean circulates from the deep sea to the shallow shores.

The challenge to the KMer is to provide management of both these forms to the attainment of the ultimate objectives of  the system.

Confusion to Confluence

We are amidst a  very interesting phase of general elections to the Indian Parliament. Over 70o million voters, over 50 major political parties, 4 major alliances- fronts and many more loose conglomerations, 0ver 7000 candidates, 5 phase elections spread out over 50 days - the sheer numbers are mind boggling.

At the time of writing this post, there is quite uncertainity, with every party and leader wanting to retain their friends and at the same time convert their enemies also into friends.

If the purpose of KM is to share, associate, network and lead towards a common goal then, here is an excellent opportunity for KMers to assist our political class to convert and converge the present confusion into a Confluence for Good Governance.

CKO Humour

First CKO: In order to speed up justice, we adopted a novel fast track method in our company. Still the people are unhappy than before.

Second CKO: What was your novel method?

First CKO: We distributed the incentives and punishments first and then conducted the performance appraisal. :-(

Bangalore Vs Buffalo

While we are praising the globalisation effect of the "Knowledge Economy" to seamlessly integrate all forms of assets' Productivity, we hear from the President of America this news to give preference to Buffalo over Bangalore.

Like water flows to the lowest location, work automatically flows to the place where the "Knowledge" for the work is available at the most productive price and attempts to control this natural flow would only create an artificial dam of distress for people.

Here is hoping that the current distress feeling of the global recession vanish quickly so that everyone is able to transfer and share his knowledge to his greatest gains.

Knowledge of Miracles

Sometimes we come across happenings that might be conceived as "Miracles" and then we try to correlate the same to some causes like past karmas, blessings of elders, spiritual powers of saints or simply the divine action of the almighty. While such miracles keep happening now and then it is sometimes interesting to introspect that the billions of movements and actions comprising every day life itself can be construed as miracles. Is not the entire cosmic system of galaxies, stars, planets, asteriods etc interact in a complex system  of movements within and without. Is not the living and non-living on the planets undergo a complex pattern of organic and inorganic reaction on a continuous basis without any external control.

If we can understand the knowledge behind these constant churning of miracles, it won't surprise us that sporadic miracles ( or may be exterme mysteries/ miseries) can also be caused once in a while by some unexplicable reasons.

German KM Society - An Inspiration

One more learning of the KM study mission was to understand the activities of the KM society of Germany and we could get the excellent intelectual thinking of its members by listening to the presentations on subejcts varying from KMs future to use of meta data for Web 2.0 tools. That gives a glimmer of a spark that similar attempt should be made in Delhi - India as well to inter connect the KM community.

Hope the thinking gets an impetus.
